The Electric Cooperative Foundation, Inc. was created by the electric cooperatives of Alabama in 1997 in an effort to give back to the communities they serve by providing scholarships for post-secondary and vocational education to accredited institutions for qualifying high school seniors. For the spring of 2019, the Foundation will award scholarships to dependents of members of the participating electric cooperatives in each of the 21 districts established by the Foundation’s Board of Directors. The sole decision as to whom is to receive the scholarship in each established district will be determined by the Board of Directors of the Foundation. However, the Foundation may request or enlist the assistance of the electric cooperatives in each district in disseminating the applications and information about the scholarships, and may request assistance from such electric cooperatives in gathering and screening the scholarship applications, although such assistance and the final determination shall at all times remain under the direction and control of the Board of Directors of the Foundation
The terms and conditions on which the scholarships are to be made for the 2019 scholarship year, are as follows:
1. The scholarships shall be transmitted to the accredited school selected by the scholarship recipient. The Founda-
tion has given $742,500 in scholarships since 2001. Individual scholarships have ranged in the past from $500 to
$2,500.
2. The scholarship shall be granted only to graduating high school seniors.
3. The scholarships shall be announced and awarded in the spring prior to the recipient’s graduation, but are con-
tingent and subject to the scholarship recipient graduating from high school and passing any required graduation
exam.
4. The one-time scholarship will be available for use by the student for the immediate 4 academic years following the
student’s high school graduation.
5. The scholarship will be paid by the Foundation directly to the educational institution for credit to the student’s
account at the institution with notification of receipt to be received from the educational institution.
6. In order to qualify for the partial scholarship, the student must attend a four year college, a junior college, a
technical school or vocational school of the scholarship recipient’s choice provided that such school chosen is an
accredited institution.
7. In order for the scholarship funds to be received to the benefit of the scholarship recipient, the student must enroll
on a full-time basis at the institution selected, which full-time status must be certified to by the institution. Failure
to qualify as a full-time student will result in a rescission of the scholarship with the funds being returned from
the institution to the Foundation. There are no exceptions to this rule, and except as determined by the Founda-
tion on a nondiscriminatory basis, there will be no deferral of enrollment.
8. In order to qualify for the scholarship, the applicant must be a dependent child of a member of a participating
Alabama electric cooperative at the time the application is made and through graduation from high school.
9. The scholarships will not be awarded solely based on need, nor will need be a predominate basis upon which any
determination is made.
10. If an applicant’s parents live in two different districts established by the Foundation, the applicant shall only be
permitted to apply for a scholarship in one district.
